This is why it’s so important to use a good quality knife sharpener. Be especially aware of the knife sharpeners that you place on the counter and then manually run the knife through the “sharpener”. It often scrapes the metal and is too abrasive, leaving gouges and nicks in the blade.

How To Sharpen Knives With an Electric Sharpener
- Run your knife through each stage of the electric knife sharpener all the way through.
- Don’t push too hard, but also make sure to run the whole edge of the blade through the machine. I pass through the same amount of times on each side.
- Then, move on to stage two and repeat.
- The machine will automatically guide the knife through each stage, you just have to lightly hold on to it and follow it.
- Look at the blade closely to make sure it looks smooth and realigned. You shouldn’t see nicks and gouges.
- Test the blade and see if it is sharp enough. The paper test is so fun to do 😀.
- Lastly, pass the knife blade through stage 3. This is the final polishing stage.
- Before you start using the sharpened knives to cut food, wash them to get rid of any metal shavings. That’s it! Your knives are ready to be used.
Frequently Asked Questions
Honestly, this really depends on how often you use them. If you use your knives a lot, you’ll need to sharpen them more often. I sharpen them whenever they feel dull, every few months, and sometimes even more often when I do a lot of meal prep and cooking. It also depends on what you use your knives for. If you break down whole chickens and cut through bone, your knives will get a lot more wear and tear than if you mostly cut through soft fruits, vegetables and herbs.
1. Wash them by hand, don’t run them through the dishwasher.
2. Also, don’t use knives on marble, glass or metal cutting boards and surfaces. This dulls and damages the blades much faster.
3. Don’t use your kitchen knives to cut through anything that would damage them, such as metal, wood, etc. Try to use them only for kitchen tasks:).
Store them in a knife block, knife tray in a drawer or a magnetic strip, anything that will protect the blades of your knives. Knife sheaths or storage rolls are also great. Don’t store them in drawer that can be banged around and nick your blades with other kitchen tools.
If you regularly sharpen your knives, you only need to put the knife blade through each section about 6 times.
If you’ve never sharpened your knives and they are in rough shape, you may need to do it 15-20 times through each section. Look closely at the blade to see if the blade is smooth and realigned. Test the knife by cutting through a tomato or do the paper test:).
